1875 $5. The purpose of this and the similar $10 pattern is not known, for no record has been encountered of any interest in changing the current Liberty Head or Coronet design for the $5.
Obverse: Barber’s Liberty Head (“Sailor Head”) facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, hair tied back with a ribbon; similar to the motif used on the J-1392 twenty-cent piece.
Reverse: Eagle similar to that used on the trade dollar and twenty-cent piece, perched, holding three arrows and an olive branch, E PLURIBUS UNUM in field above eagle, IN GOD WE TRUST on ribbon below. Around border, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / FIVE DOLLARS.
