The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”
1872 Amazonian Gold Dollar.
Obverse Description
The obverse features a head of Liberty wearing a liberty cap bound by a band with the word “LIBERTY” written upon it. The head is surrounded by 13 stars; the date “1872” is below the bust. This head is an enlarged version of that used on Barber’s Amazonian pattern quarters, half dollars, and silver dollars, thus the appellation was applied to the gold patterns, as well.
Reverse Description
The reverse features an eagle protecting a shield and a scroll that reads “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
