Obverse Description
A portrait bearing the likeness of a Native American in full headdress framed by the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery. The date is centered at the bottom under the portrait.
Reverse Description
The reverse bears the denomination of ONE CENT in the center surrounded by a wreath bearing a ribbon with arrows tied in at the bottom center.

Key to Collecting: For reasons that are not clear today, Mint Director James Ross Snowden found the laurel wreath reverse of the 1859 cent to be unsatisfactory and directed that patterns be made for a new style. In 1860 this new style became the standard. The new motif, popularly called the “oak wreath and shield,” was adopted and was continued in use for the remainder of the Indian Head cent series. Today, examples exist in all grades. However, finding a sharply struck one can be a challenge. The lowest-mintage date of this type, the 1861, is also the date usually found with the best strike. Mint State coins are very plentiful, especially in grades from MS-60 to MS-63. Most often seen are those dated 1862 and 1863.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Usually weakly struck on the obverse, especially at the tips of the feathers and the ribbon on the headdress, although other points should be checked as well. Probably not one coin in ten is a sharp strike, if indeed even that many.
Proof Coins: Scarce. These exist in proportion to their mintages. Truly choice pieces with deep mirror surfaces and without flecks or problems are very rare, but as such things are not widely noticed by most buyers, you can quietly search until you find one.
