1849 G$10 Moffat & Co., TEN D., K-5 PR

The 1849 TEN D. coin appears to be the last variety of eagle struck by Moffat & Company in 1849. The obverse die—shared with both the K-6 and K-6a Moffat & Compan.y $10 coins—is in its latest die state and is paired with a new reverse that reads TEN D at the bottom. Many K-5 eagles are weakly struck in the centers due to obverse die bulging. There are somewhere between 50 and 60 examples known, 17 of which were recovered from the SS Central America. The single known Proof example is in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution and traces its provenance to the Mint Cabinet collection. The K-5a Large Letters Reverse variety has not been confirmed and most likely does not exist.
