New Zealand’s participation in the modern Olympic Games began in 1908 when athletes from both Australia and New Zealand competed in the London Olympic Games as part of the Australasia Team. This combined team also sent athletes to the  1912 Games in Stockholm however, when the Olympic Games resumed in 1920 after World War I, both nations sent separate teams to the Games, and have done so ever since. The last time New Zealand’s Olympic athletes participated in Olympic Games hosted in Paris was 100 years ago with just four competitors comprising two runners, a rower, and a 15-year-old swimmer. It was Sir Arthur Porrit (1900 – 1994) won a bronze medal in the 100 metre dash event. Today, the 2024 Games represent New Zealand's twenty-fifth appearance as an independent nation and are represented by 195 athletes competing across 23 sports. Team New Zealand were led by flag bearers track cyclist Aaron Gate and sailing athlete Jo Aleh who were chosen by their fellow Olympians. Gate won bronze at the London 2012 Olympic Games and is now a four-time Olympian who is also one of New Zealand’s most decorated ever Commonwealth Games athletes, with six medals, including the four golds won at Birmingham in 2022. Aleh is a two-time Olympic medallist, having won gold at London 2012 and silver at Rio 2016, alongside crewmate Polly Powrie. New Zealand’s most successful sport has been rowing with 29 medals, athletics is second with 26 medals. Before the 2022 Winter Olympics, the 140 medals won by New Zealand put the country at number 32 on the all-time Olympic Games medal table for total number of medals and number 24 when tabulated by medal type.

The coins and coin-ingots are produced by the Sunshine Mint Inc. at their facilities in Idaho, United States on behalf of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and are designed by Hannah Fortune.
