The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”
Proof versions of the 20 cent coin were issued for the brief period these coins were struck, from 1875 through 1878. While the "double dime," designed by William Barber, proved quite unpopular with much of the public, proofs were struck by the Philadelphia Mint during each of the four years the denomination was in production.
In 1877 and 1878, the last two years the 20 cent series was struck, only proofs were made, with 510 of the former date and 600 of the latter. Today, the 1877 and 1878 proof-only 20 cent coin are highly scarce and valuable, as they are sought after by collectors who wish to assemble date runs of the short-lived series. The 1875 and 1876 proofs, with 1,150 of the earlier and 1,200 of the latter, are the most common proof specimens.
Cameo and deep cameo proofs as well as pieces with brilliant fields are the scarcest proofs and command strong premiums over standard prices. However, all proof 20 cent coins are scarce and treasured numismatic relics.

Book Reference
Designer: William Barber. Weight: 5 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper. Diameter: 22 mm. Edge: Plain. Mints: Philadelphia, Carson City, San Francisco.
Key to Collecting: Mint State and Proof examples are readily available for inclusion in a type set, the 1875-S circulation strike being the most plentiful, as might be expected from its overwhelmingly large mintage, and the 1875-CC a distant second, although the 1875 and 1876 Philadelphia pieces are offered now and then. Grades usually range from VF to AU. This denomination did not circulate long enough to generate many wellworn pieces, such as AG-3 or G-4. Mint State coins are available for 1875, 1875-CC, 1875-S, and 1876 (the 1876-CC being a rarity). Generally, the 1875-CC and 1875-S (in particular) are the most often seen, in grades from MS-60 upward.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: These characteristics vary from coin to coin. Points to check include the eagle’s wing feathers, especially at the top of the wings, and the letters around the border. Generally, the 1875 and 1876 Philadelphia coins are the best struck and have the deepest luster.
Proof Coins: The easiest to find are the 1875 and 1876. The 1877 and 1878 are of lower mintages and are also in greater demand due to their Proof-only status (no related circulation strikes were made). Avoid dark and deeply toned pieces. Quality can be a problem.
