Obverse Description
Liberty is portrayed standing on a rock, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The word LIBERTY appears on the top periphery surrounded by stars. The date is stamped on the right side of the coin, just above the rock.
Reverse Description
A crescent sun appears at the bottom as if rising on the horizon with long rays extending to the top of the coin. A flying eagle covers the central portion, atop the rays. The words UNITED STATES oF AMERICA, TWENTY DOLLARS appear on the top periphery.

Key to Collecting: Today, coins of this type are extremely common. Examples are available in just about any grade desired, with EF and AU pieces abounding, but I suggest you ignore them as Mint State coins are readily available. Most are quite attractive, this being particularly true for the issues after 1921 (before then the eye appeal often varies widely).
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: The striking is usually good, but there are exceptions. Check the features of Liberty, the details of the tiny Capitol building at the lower left, and other aspects. Some pieces have arc-like ridges around the periphery, a slight distance in from the edge, seemingly an artifact of extensive die use.
Proof Coins: Proofs of this era can be divided into two categories: the Sand Blast Proofs of 1908 and 1911 to 1915, in which coins from regular dies, but carefully struck on a medal press, were subjected to blasting by sand particles, giving them a rough or sandpaper like finish; and Satin Finish Proofs, sometimes called Roman Finish Proofs, made in 1909 and 1910 with satiny bright yellow surfaces.
