Designers: Obverse: Glenna Goodacre; Reverse: Thomas D. Rogers Sr. Weight: 8.1 grams. Composition: Pure copper core with outer layers of manganese brass (.770 copper, .120 zinc, .070 manganese, and .040 nickel). Diameter: 26.5 mm. Edge: Plain. Mints: Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco; 22-karat gold experimental specimens dated 2000-W were struck at West Point in 1999.

Key to Collecting: The Sacagawea dollar, called the “Golden Dollar” in United States Mint publicity, was launched with much enthusiasm in 2000. Then-Mint Director Jay Johnson went on the road to promote its use as a substitute for paper dollars, a replay of the failed Susan B. Anthony dollar concept, but this time around with the new hope that the yellow appearance would make it more easily distinguishable from the similarly sized quarter dollar. Canada had enjoyed the success of its gold-colored dollar coins picturing a loon, nicknamed “loonies,” since 1987. Johnson’s stops included numismatic conventions where he was well received, as were the coins. However, in time the scenario played out similar to that of the Anthony dollars: numismatists loved them, but the public had little interest. Circulated coins are available easily enough, but not relevant to what you want. Choose a Mint State coin instead. Today, a nice little collection can be formed of the different date and mint varieties, including Proofs.

Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Usually well struck and of very pleasing appearance. Spotting has occurred on some pieces, a reaction of the outer manganese brass metal with the atmosphere, and such pieces should be avoided. Generally most have excellent aesthetic appeal. Some pieces given by the Mint to designer Glenna Goodacre have a special finish and are especially prized, having entered the secondary market; apparently the lagniappe was unintended by the Mint.
