Obverse Description
Lady liberty is seated on a rock bearing a shield with the word LIBERTY. 13 Stars frame the periphery with the date at the bottom middle under the rock.
Reverse Description
The heraldic eagle is centered in the design with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOL. around the periphery.

Designer: Christian Gobrecht. Weight: 13.36 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper. Diameter: 30.6 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mint: Philadelphia.
Key to Collecting: The earliest Liberty Seated half dollars of 1839, comprising an estimated 600,000 pieces (about a third of the total mintage of 1,972,400), lack drapery at Liberty’s elbow. In that year, Robert Ball Hughes modified Gobrecht’s design by adding this feature, which was continued for the rest of the series. Among other Liberty Seated silver coins, the half dime, dime, and quarter each exist with and without drapery, while the Liberty Seated dollar with perched eagle reverse, introduced in 1840, began with the modified with-drapery style. Today, circulated examples of the 1839 No Drapery half dollar are slightly scarce, but in lower grades, the prices are inexpensive. Mint State pieces are rare. In quite a few years of buying, selling, and auctioning major collections, I have only seen a few choice or finer Mint State pieces.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Points to check include the high areas of Liberty, the details of her head, and the stars on the obverse, these usually being fairly sharp. On the reverse, the eagle is often slightly weak at the lower left.
Proof Coins: For all practical purposes Proofs are unobtainable. Perhaps one or two are known today.
