Obverse Description
Lady Liberty is seated on a rock, holding a staff, and bearing a shield with the word LIBERTY on a flowing ribbon. The date appears at the bottom center.
Reverse Description
The words HALF DIME are centered and surrounded by a wreath tied by ribbon and bow at the bottom with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery.

Designer: Christian Gobrecht. Weight: 1.34 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper. Diameter: 15.5 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, New Orleans.
Key to Collecting: The Liberty Seated design without obverse stars was used in the half dime and dime series only at the Philadelphia Mint in 1837 and the New Orleans Mint in 1838 (1838-O). Liberty has no drapery at her elbow. These coins are very attractive, and the starless obverse gives them a cameo-like appearance. Circulated coins are plentiful in the context of the era. All grades are available, with EF and AU examples being scarcer than lower grades. Enough Mint State pieces are available, so that finding one will be no problem. Two thousand or more exist, most of which are lustrous and quite attractive, a field of opportunity wider than for the related dimes. Nearly all are dated 1837.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Usually seen well struck, except for the denticles, which are often mushy. Points to check include the denticles on obverse and reverse and the highest parts of the Liberty Seated figure and the leaves.
Proof Coins: It is likely that at least several dozen Proofs were made of the 1837 half dime, although perhaps more were made of the related dime. Today, attractive examples exist and are rare. Nearly all I have seen called Proofs are, indeed, Proofs. If you aspire to acquire one, select an example with deep mirror surfaces.
