Obverse Description
Lady Liberty is seated on a rock, holding a staff, and bearing a shield with the word LIBERTY on a flowing ribbon. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA adorns the periphery and the date appears at the bottom center.
Reverse Description
The words HALF DIME are centered and surrounded by an ornate wreath tied by ribbon and double bow at the bottom.
Book Reference
Designer: Christian Gobrecht. Weight: 1.24 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper. Diameter: 15.5 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco.
Key to Collecting: Half dimes of this type were made for slightly more than a decade, beginning in 1860. After spring 1862, no silver coins of any kind circulated in the East and Midwest, although they remained in commerce on the West Coast. Half dimes were first struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1863. The Coinage Act of 1873 ended the denomination. Finding a nice example for your type set will be no problem. Mint State coins are readily available, usually dated 1860 to 1862 or in the early 1870’s.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Usually fairly well struck. Points to check include the head of Liberty on the obverse, the wreath details on the reverse (particularly in the lower areas), and the denticles. Generally, Mint State coins have excellent luster.
Proof Coins: Proofs are available in proportion to their mintages. Choice and gem examples can be found much more readily than in the larger Liberty Seated denominations.
