Obverse Description

Christian Gobrecht's portrait of Liberty is surrounded by 13 stars with the date centered at the bottom.

Reverse Description

Heraldic eagle holding arrows and branch in its claws is centered in the design with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * @ 2 1/2 D. around the periphery. Mintmark (if any) is located under the eagle's claws.

Book Reference

Designer: Christian Gobrecht. Weight: 4.18 grams. Composition: .900 gold, .100 copper (net weight .12094 oz. pure gold). Diameter: 18 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, San Francisco.

Key to Collecting: Introduced in 1840, the Liberty Head quarter eagle remained in use with essentially the same design until 1907, the longest such span in American coinage history. Early dates range from scarce to rare, and most circulated coins are in grades VF to AU, while Mint State coins are exceedingly rare. Toward the end of the series, in the first decade of the 20th century, Mint State pieces abound. These attractive coins, of cameo-like appearance, have long been numismatic favorites.

Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Most pieces are fairly well struck if dated from 1880 onward. Earlier coins, especially of the Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans mints, are often lightly struck in areas. The main point to check is the eagle, the details of which can be shallow to the lower left of the shield, and also in the lower part of the eagle’s neck.

Proof Coins: Proof coins exist in relation to their original mintages. Most attractive are the frosty cameo issues of the late 19th century.
