Obverse Description

Christian Gobrecht's portrait of Liberty is surrounded by 13 stars with the date centered at the bottom.

Reverse Description

Shielded eagle with wings outstretched holding arrows and olive branches. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * TWENTY D. appear around the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears below the eagle's tail, above the N in TWENTY.

Book Reference

Designer: James B. Longacre. Weight: 33.436 grams. Composition: .900 gold, .100 copper (net weight: .96750 oz. pure gold). Diameter 34 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, Carson City, Denver, New Orleans, San Francisco.

Key to Collecting: Examples are as common as can be and are available in just about any grade desired. Options exist to take the easy way out and acquire a high-mintage variety of the early 20th century, or else pick something a bit scarcer, perhaps a Carson City issue. Mint State pieces abound, especially for the high-mintage issues near the turn of the 20th century.

Aspects of Striking and Appearance: The striking is usually much better on this type than on the one before, although the hair details, stars, and reverse features should all be checked. Luster varies widely depending on the date and mint.

Proof Coins: Proofs were minted of all years 1877 through 1907. In 1902 the dies were polished, eliminating the numismatically desirable frosty or cameo effect. From that point through 1907, dies vary in their contrast. Many Proofs are impaired, and for some reason, among a given 10 surviving examples of this type, more are impaired than among a given 10 survivors of the Variety 2 style.
