The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”

Book Reference
Designer: James B. Longacre. Weight: 33.436 grams. Composition: .900 gold, .100 copper (net weight: .96750 oz. pure gold). Diameter 34 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco.
Key to Collecting: Double eagles of the first type are readily available in just about every grade desired. Until the recent era examples of this type were scarcely ever seen in choice Mint State. Today, coins recovered from the SS Yankee Blade (lost in 1854), SS Central America (1857), SS Brother Jonathan (1865), and SS Republic (1865) have provided a generous supply of choice examples. In 1861 a variety or subtype was created by Anthony C. Paquet, using tall letters on the reverse. This can be collected as a separate type, if desired.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Striking is usually quite good for dates from 1850 through 1858. In 1859 there was a slight modification, and the hair detail, as per the original dies, is not as sharp. Beyond that, in the context of whatever date you select, check the sharpness of Liberty’s hair, not only in the central parts but on the curls down to her neck, and the sharpness of the stars. On the reverse, check the details of the shield and eagle. Denticles can be checked on both sides.
Proof Coins: Proofs are occasionally seen of this type, beginning in this instance with 1859 and continuing through 1865. However, as a class they are exceedingly rare.
