Obverse Description
Liberty is seen with a formal, or classic, hair style, facing left with 13 stars around the periphery and the date centered at the bottom. Mint mark, if any, is positioned above the date.
Reverse Description
An eagle with wings fully spread. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery with "5 D." written as a fraction appears at the bottom.

Key to Collecting: The Classic Head half eagle of 1834 to 1838 is the first truly plentiful type of the denomination and also one of the most historically interesting (see introductory half eagle comments). Some collectors opt to start their sets with this era, in the various denominations. The Classic Head half eagles were immensely popular in domestic circulation, the first such pieces to achieve extensive use in commerce since 1820. Today, many examples are seen in such grades as VF and EF, with AU being in the minority and Mint State pieces being somewhat elusive. Most are in lower ranges. True choice and gem coins are seldom seen and are numismatic prizes.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Striking varies, but there are enough examples around that you can afford to be particular. Check the hair details below the LIBERTY band and to the lower right. On the reverse, check the details of the eagle.
Proof Coins: Proofs were struck of the various years and are exceedingly rare today. Of the few that exist, most are of the 1834 date.
