Very popular two-year type coin with the benefit of also being a silver dollar, so demand generally exceeds supply. The 1794 is rare so the only collectible issue is dated 1795.
Obverse Description
The original design of Liberty, facing right, with hair flowing as if facing a slight breeze. 8 and 7 stars on the left and right periphery, respectively with the word LIBERTY across the top and the date positioned in the bottom center.
Reverse Description
A small eagle standing on branches surrounded by olive branches that are tied in a bow at the bottom. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery. No denomination is mentioned.
Book Reference
Engraver: Robert Scot. Weight: 26.96 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper (net weight 0.78011 oz. pure silver). Diameter: Approximately 39–40 mm. Edge: HUNDRED CENTS ONE DOLLAR OR UNIT with decorations between words. Mint: Philadelphia.
Key to Collecting: The first silver dollar design comprises the years 1794 and 1795. Just 1,758 were struck of 1794, making it a rarity today, while an estimated 162,053 or more were struck of the 1795, probably 4,000 to 7,500 or so existing. Accordingly, a 1795, from G to F, will be the object of your search. EF and AU grades are elusive in regard to the total population, although they are much more available that half dimes or half dollars of the same design. Interestingly, the Flowing Hair silver dollar is also the easiest to locate in any and all grades. However, well-struck pieces without adjustment marks are another subject altogether, and such coins can be called rare.
Probably somewhere between 150 to 250 Mint State coins exist, the vast preponderance being of the 1795 date, and nearly all in lower Mint State levels. Perhaps five to ten 1794 dollars (from a total surviving population estimated at about 135) qualify at Mint State.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: There were many different die combinations of this type, some of which lacked detail when made—such as on the hair of Liberty. Finding a coin from a well-detailed die, and showing such features as hair details, sharp star centers, and sharp breast feathers on the eagle, will be a challenge—not in the league of the challenge facing you for the half dollar of the Flowing Hair type, but still requiring quite a bit of effort. It is precisely such a challenge, which translates to an enjoyable procedure that contributes to the fascination of early type coins. Then there is the matter of adjustment marks. All 1794 dollars I’ve ever seen have some light striking on the lower left stars, and nearly all have adjustment marks. For the 1795 dollars, the situation is better, and pieces without adjustment marks can be found, but not easily.
