Obverse Description
Liberty with cap, facing right, surrounded by 13 stars and the word LIBERTY around the periphery. The date is centered at the bottom.
Reverse Description
The centerpiece of the reverse is the so-called "heraldic eagle" with wings fully spread and emblazoned with a shield replacing the chest. A ribbon bearing the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM hangs from the beak. The eagles right talon holds bundle of arrows and an olive branch in the right. Above the eagle's head are a group of stars and clouds with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the top periphery. No denomination is mentioned.

Designer: Robert Scot. Weight: 4.37 grams. Composition: .9167 gold, .0833 silver and copper (net weight .14131 oz. pure gold). Diameter: Approximately 20 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mint: Philadelphia.
Key to Collecting: While the 1796 to 1807 type with Capped Bust to Right, now with stars on the obverse, is more available than the starless 1796, examples are still very rare, with the entire mintage falling below 20,000 pieces. Few if any of these were deliberately saved for numismatic purposes. The star arrangements on the obverse vary, as do the star counts on the reverse, but these have not generally been considered as separate types. Most extant examples are circulated, typically in EF and AU grades, rarely lower. As a class, such pieces are rare, this being especially true of the earlier dates of the type. Mint State pieces are quite rare, not in the league of the 1796 without stars, but still very difficult to find. Some at the MS-60 or so level have graduated or moved up from being called AU a generation ago, the same being true of many other coins in different series. Choice and gem pieces are very rare, especially if sharply struck and with good eye appeal.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Striking varies. Typically, some weakness is shown at one of more of these areas: central hair details of Liberty, stars at the left and right obverse border, and obverse denticles. On the reverse weakness is often seen at the center as well as on the stars above the eagle and the denticles. Perfection is more of a goal than a reality, but still within the available supply many pieces are better struck than are others.
Notes: There is no indication of the denomination of this coin on the obverse, reverse, or edge. Certain of the same reverse dies were used on both dimes and quarter eagles of this era.
