Key to Collecting: The term Coronet Head (or sometimes Matron Head) to describe cents of 1816 to 1835 (no cents were struck in 1815) seems to have been popularized by Kenneth E. Bressett as a heading for listings in the Red Book, possibly after use of the term by members of the Early American Coppers Club. The same general portrait was in use from 1816 to 1835, after which it went through several modifications of neck and hair style (see following 1836 to 1839 type). Many collectors of type coins choose to ignore the modifications and include the Matron Head as extending from 1816 to 1839. Those of 1816 to 1820 (particularly 1818 and 1820) are readily available in Mint State from the famous Randall Hoard. Otherwise, Mint State coins are generally scarce in the type, although those of the 1830’s are more available than those of the 1820’s. Circulated examples exist in approximate relationship to their mintages.

Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Vary widely. Points to look for include denticles on both sides, star centers, hair details, and leaf details.

Proof Coins: Proofs were made of most dates from about 1817 onward. A few “expertized” as Proofs are simply circulation strikes with somewhat prooflike surfaces, sometimes so deeply toned that little can be ascertained about the true character of the surface. Opinions vary widely, and I suggest that you bide your time until you find a deeply reflective fully mirrorlike example that has been reviewed by a trusted dealer or other expert.

Key to Collecting: The era of Coronet Head, Modified, coinage (1836–1839) includes different portrait styles by Christian Gobrecht, who seems to have been experimenting. In 1837 a beaded hair cord was introduced to tie the bun in Liberty’s hair. Other variations include the facial and head appearances and shape of the neck truncation as well as hair-strand placement. Distinctive names such as Booby Head and Silly Head have been given to some of the 1839 varieties. Enough cents of the 1836 to 1839 era exist that examples are readily available in all circulated grades, although those of 1839 are more elusive than others. Mint State coins are scarce, but come on the market with regularity. Grades range from MS-60 and upward, generally with brown or red-and-brown surfaces. Many have been cleaned and retoned. However, choice pieces do exist, and some have outstanding eye appeal.

Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Generally quite good. However, check for denticles, star centers, hair details, and leaf denticles.
