Key to Collecting: Attractive circulation-strike specimens are found easily enough in grades from VF to AU. Mint State coins, mostly from old hoards, are often spotted and require care when buying. There are many retoned and artificially colored pieces on the market, including ones in certified holders. Cherrypicking is strongly recommended, and you may have to consider several or more possibilities before finding one with excellent aesthetic appeal.

Aspects of Striking and Appearance: As a general rule, the earlier dates of this type, including the high-mintage 1809, are usually seen lightly struck in areas, particularly on the portrait details. Half cents of the 1820’s and 1830’s are usually well struck. Points to check include the star centers, hair details, and leaf details.

Proof Coins: Proofs were struck of various years in the 1820’s and 1830’s, with 1831 and 1836 being great rarities (these dates were also restruck at the Mint circa 1859 and later). Some prooflike coins (especially of the 1833 date) have been sold as Proofs. Finding a choice Proof with excellent appeal is a daunting task.
