The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”
Scarce and desirable as a short-lived series. High grade examples of classic head large cents of any date are especially scarce due to poorly made planchets composed of soft copper.

Key to Collecting: Today, all dates are available, with no major rarities, although those of 1809 are considered to be scarcer than the others. When found, an ideal piece will probably not cost much more than an average specimen of its date and grade, for most buyers are not oriented toward seeking quality. Grading numbers alone suffice for all but dedicated specialists. Mint State coins are exceedingly rare. Most are in lower grade ranges such as MS-60 to MS-63.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Striking sharpness varies. Generally, the earlier dates in the type are less well defined than are 1813 and 1814. They are seen on light brown planchets and are somewhat casually struck, with many design details weak or absent. Points to look for include sharpness of the denticles, star centers, hair details, and leaf details. Cents of 1814 are sometimes dark and porous due to the copper stock used. Finding a sharply struck Classic Head cent with smooth, attractive fields will be a great challenge involving inspecting many coins.
