All Proof 1922 High Relief Peace dollars were produced in the same manner, struck multiple times on the Mint's medal press to bring up even the most intricate elements of the design. Once struck the coins were sandblasted in the Mint, this type of finish being popular at the time in production of high quality medallic and coinage works of art. These coins are often referred to as "Matte Proofs," or being of a "matte finish," although they are more accurately described as Sand Blast Proofs in keeping with the method of manufacture.
Obverse Description
Portrait of a crowned Liberty featuring the word LIBERTY at the top periphery. The motto IN GOD WE left of Liberty's neck and TRUST to the right. The date in centered at the bottom.
Reverse Description
Perched eagle standing on a rock facing the right with UNITED STATES oF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM at the top periphery. The denomination of ONE DOLLAR left and right of the eagle's tail and the word PEACE at the bottom. Mintmark, if any, appears below the word ONE on the left side.

Key to Collecting: Millions of these coins exist in just about every grade desired. For type-set purposes a choice or gem example of one of the inexpensive dates will be ideal. Most are richly lustrous and quite attractive. The quality of the luster varies considerably, from “deeply frosty” for certain earlier issues to rather “creamy and satiny” for certain varieties of the 1930’s—a curious aspect.

Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Generally good, in view of the design modifications. Check the central hair features and the feathers on the eagle. These will not be needle-sharp, as they were not in the original die. However, they should show no areas of flatness and no blank areas.
Proof Coins: More than 10 authentic Sand Blast Proofs exist, plus more that are phony pretenders, sometimes with “papers.” Be super careful!
