The 1912-D is the final year for the ever so popular Liberty Nickel Series and the only one minted in Denver. Just the finest of gems are scarce and valuable at all. A common yet desirable coin because it has a mint mark. There are some nice gems out there with pretty toning and a strong strike.
Obverse Description
Lady Liberty with the word LIBERTY on her crown faces left with 13 stars around the periphery and the date positioned at the bottom center.
Reverse Description
Large V (roman numeral 5) is centered in the design surrounded by an ornate wreath with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * CENTS * around the periphery. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears near the top between the wreath and letters STATES OF AME.

Key to Collecting: This is the first Denver Mint nickel. Examples in worn grades are usually Good to Very Good. Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated coins are quite scarce. In Mint State the 1912-D is much rarer than the mintage figure might suggest, especially when compared to the 1912-S (mintage 238,000, or 1/36 that of 1912-D). For a long time I have suggested this, but the high published mintage figure has kept the price down. Today the certification data suggest that in Mint State the 1912-D is seen about twice as often as the 1912-S, not 36 times as often! The 1912-D is somewhat of a sleeper in choice Mint State or finer.
As dozens of die pairs were used, there is no single rule to describe the sharpness, or lack thereof, on a typical 1912-D.
Typically, the dies were spaced slightly too far apart, and most show some lightness—but not to the degree found on 1912-S.
Characteristics and Appearance: Striking varies, and some range from slightly weak (check the ear of corn to the left of the ribbon bow on the reverse) to mushy overall. The luster is subdued or satiny on most, not deeply frosty. Some others are sharp. Cherrypicking is advised.
Mintage and Distribution Notes: Although this was the first nickel to be issued from the Denver Mint, no record of any exceptional public interest has been found—probably because the Liberty Head design was very familiar in circulation by that time, and interest in mintmarked varieties was minimal.
There were 96 obverse dies and 91 reverse dies sent to Denver, suggesting an average of 90,000 or so impressions per die pair, if all were used. Likely, several dozen dies were never employed. The reverses in this instance had unique use for the 1912-D coinage and were not carried over.
