The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”
There are at least two types of 1909 VDB doubled die varieties. However, the one that is most desirable is the Type I doubled die obverse exhibiting prominent doubling in the inscription LIBERTY and in the first 9 of the date. This doubling is visible to the naked, but trained eye ' an important factor in making this a significant and highly collectible variety. Numismatic experts believe approximately 500 or so of these Type I doubled dies exist, and they command strong premiums above the prices of non-variety 1909 VDB Lincoln cents and are scarce in Brown, Red-Brown, and Red grades.
