Key to Collecting: So many were made of this type, and over such a long period of time, that finding a suitable specimen for a type set will be easy and inexpensive.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Some Denver and San Francisco issues of the 1916 to 1929 era are lightly struck. Striking of most other issues is fairly good, but many variations occur. Check hair details on the portrait and for absence of marks on the shoulder. Seek smooth fields, and examine other areas for sharpness.
Proof Coins: Matte Proofs are nearly always superbly struck. Most are brown or brown with tinges of red. Most fully red coins have been cleaned or recolored, but there are exceptions. Proofs of the 1936 to 1942 and 1950 to 1958 eras are mostly with dies polished overall, although some later issues have frosted (“cameo”) portraits.
