The 1898-S Morgan dollar is a common coin in circulated grades and up through MS64, with Gems in the MS65 range or higher proving much scarcer and MS67s extremely rare. Amazingly, at least one has been certified as MS68, with premiums for this grade soaring into astronomical levels. PLs and DMPLs are quite scarce, and Gems with either designation are rare.
Obverse Description
Portrait of Liberty centered. On the left are found 7 stars with the words E*PLURIBUS*UNUM followed by 6 stars on the right. The date is positioned at the bottom.
Reverse Description
The heraldic eagle is centered holding a bunch of arrows and branch surrounded by and olive leaves. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * ONE DOLLAR frame the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears above the letters DO of DOLLAR.
Book Reference
Key to Collecting: The 1898-S is sometimes seen softly struck, so some searching is needed to find a choice one. Luster is subtle, even satiny. There are enough 1898-S dollars around that an MS-63 is easily enough found, and an MS-64 coin is within reach. Gem MS-65 and higher pieces are in the minority, but are not rarities.
Surface Quality: Usually seen well struck, but there are exceptions. As always, a good eye helps form a good collection. Usually lustrous and attractive.
Prooflike Coins: Some are prooflike, but they usually have low contrast.
Mintage and Distribution: Delivery figures by month: January, 600,000; February, 450,000; March, 500,000; April, 500,000; May, 276,000; June, 44,000; July–September, 0; October, 552,000; November, 380,000; December, 800,000. Much of the mintage of the 1898-S went into storage at the San Francisco Mint. Large numbers of bags were paid out in the 1920’s, when there was little numismatic interest, and nearly all went into circulation. More bags were released in the 1940’s and 1950’s, with many going to Nevada casinos, although some were picked up by dealers and investors. By time of the 1962 through 1964 Treasury release, most had long since fled from the vaults.
VARIETIES:
Many varieties of date and mintmark positions from 20 obverse and 15 reverse dies shipped. Among the varieties, VAM-6 has a sharply doubled mintmark, with the first and lighter mintmarks appearing lower. This particular variety also has a slightly doubled date. VAM-10 of 1898-S has the S mintmark tilted dramatically to the right, quite interesting to observe.
