Key to Collecting: The 1898-O is the first of the “big three” rarities released from a long-sealed vault in November 1962 to ignite the great Treasury-release treasure hunt. Previously, in Mint State the 1898-O was a rarity. Today, the 1898-O is plentiful in all grades, including gem Mint State. Striking varies, and some are lightly defined. However, enough sharp pieces are on hand that you’ll find one easily. Considering their numismatic history and their beauty, it is easy to fall in love with an 1898-O dollar. In fact, for a sense of numismatic tradition, I suggest that you acquire Mint State pieces of each of the big three in the limelight in the 1962 release—this plus the 1903-O and 1904-O.
Surface Quality: Striking of the 1898-O ranges from poor to sharp, but is usually above average. Usually lustrous and attractive. Prooflike pieces are seen on occasion.
Prooflike Coins: Prooflike coins range from “semi” to full and are not rare. DMPL coins with good cameo contrast are also fairly plentiful and are popular, but become harder to find as the years slip by.
Mintage and Distribution: Delivery figures by month: January–April, 0; May, 500,000; June, 600,000; July, 210,000; August, 750,000; September, 30,000; October, 1,000,000; November, 450,000; December, 900,000. In late 1962 and early 1963, the 1898-O and the 1904-O dollar were released in quantities of thousands of Uncirculated bags. The 1904-O is slightly the more available of the two. Earlier, both the 1898-O and the 1904-O were very rare.
VARIETIES:
Minor varieties of date and mintmark positions from 30 pairs of dies. As always, the possibility exists that new, interesting varieties may be found. The latest edition of the VAM book is significantly expanded from the first one.
