Most 1896 proof Morgan dollars exhibit exceptional strike and quality, with the majority showcasing either cameo or deep cameo contrast. Gems are scarce, but examples grading PR67 or higher are rare. A tiny number are found as high as PR69, and these higher-end pieces are coveted by registry set builders.
Obverse Description

Reverse Description
The heraldic eagle is centered holding a bunch of arrows and branch surrounded by and olive leaves. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * ONE DOLLAR frame the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears above the letters DO of DOLLAR.

Key to Collecting: The 1896 is the first Philadelphia Mint dol- lar of the 1890’s to be common in Mint State. Examples abound, including choice MS-63 and 64 pieces as well as gem MS-65 or finer. Luster varies but is usually above average. Regardless of your budget, here lies the possibility for a nice Mint State coin in your collection.
Surface Quality: The strike is typically above average. The luster ranges from satiny to frosty. Some cherrypicking is advised to find one with deep luster.
Prooflike Coins: Prooflike pieces are seen with some occasion but are usually not with deep contrast.
Mintage and Distribution: Delivery figures by month: January, 0; February, 900,000; March, 900,000; April, 900,000; May, 900,000; June, 900,000; July, 162,000; August, 1,300,000; September, 1,300,000; October, 1,200,000; November, 514,000; December, 1,000,000. Although there seems to have been a supply of 1896 dollars in circulation since day one, in the 1950’s vast quantities were let loose into Eastern banking circles, creating a nuisance for collectors searching through bags in quest of scarce dates. More were paid out from Treasury vaults in coming years, through the early 1960’s.
PROOF STRIKES:
Mintage: 762. Delivery figures by month: January–February, 0; March, 287; April– May, 0; June, 125; July–August, 0; September, 100; October–November, 0; December, 250.
Key to Collecting: Good strike. Deep cameo contrast. Some nice ones are around. Whew! Those nasty years of weak striking, beginning in 1888, are over!
VARIETIES:
Produced in quantity, the 1896 was minted from nearly 20 known die pairs. No varieties have strongly captured the fancy of numismatists, and probably the most dramatic of the lot is VAM-5, with slight doubling on the first and last digits.
