The holy grail of Morgan dollars is none other than the 1895 proof, a coin that represents the only known Philadelphia-minted issues of the year. While 12,000 circulation strikes were reported, none have been accounted for. Thus, any coin collector who wants a truly complete collection of Morgan dollars must fork over tens of thousands of dollars (sometimes many tens of thousands of dollars) to buy a proof 1895 Morgan dollar. Some of these coins were spent as money, and thus it is possible to buy a more affordable 1895 proof Morgan – one that still costs much more than virtually any other circulated example in the series.
Several dozen example are certified in the better circulated grades, though the vast majority are uncirculated proofs. Most 1895 proof Morgan dollars do not boast cameo contrast, though a fairly large number do. DCAMs are rare but are notably more numerous for this issue than for many others. The vast majority grade between PR60-64, with a decent share in the PR65 and better grades. Those grading PR67 or higher are extremely rare.
Obverse Description

The heraldic eagle is centered holding a bunch of arrows and branch surrounded by and olive leaves. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * ONE DOLLAR frame the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears above the letters DO of DOLLAR.

Key to Collecting: In 1895, at the Philadelphia Mint, there was no coinage of silver dollars for circulation. Striking was limited to Proofs, of which only 880 were made. Early in 1896, when samples of the previous year’s precious metal coinage were submitted to the Assay Commission for review, the dollar was represented by a single Proof. Today, most of the Proofs remain and are cherished by numismatists. With the low production figure, the 1895 is far and away the rarest date in the series. The ownership of an attractive Proof is a fine thing to contemplate. Proof 1895 dollars are well struck.
As to their appearance, the contrast between the devices and the mirrored fields is medium, sort of satiny on the high spots, not deep cameo. As might be expected, the majority of these and other Proof Morgan dollars have been dipped or cleaned, although quite a few have remained in grades of Proof-65 or finer. Excellent strike, good contrast is the rule. There have been resubmissions galore to grading services, and one of these years I would not be surprised to find the population report totals will exceed the mintage figure.
VARIETIES:
By the 1980’s the American Numismatic Association Certification Service had identified five different obverse dies used to strike the Proof coinage for this year, a remarkable number. The reason for this is unexplained.
