The 1890 Liberty Nickel is slightly scarcer relative to the rest of the series out of Philadelphia. Accessible across all circulated grades and tougher in Mint State, as would be expected. MS64 and MS65 are scarce with higher end gems being very desirable and difficult to locate.
Obverse Description
Lady Liberty with the word LIBERTY on her crown faces left with 13 stars around the periphery and the date positioned at the bottom center.
Reverse Description
Large V (roman numeral 5) is centered in the design surrounded by an ornate wreath with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * CENTS * around the periphery. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears near the top between the wreath and letters STATES OF AME.

Key to Collecting: The 1890 nickel should be plentiful in choice and gem Mint State, but it is not. There are two reasons for this. First, at this time the nation was having economic hiccups from overexpansion in the prairie states, and the coin market was in the doldrums. Many of the rarities in the auction offering of the Lorin G. Parmelee sale this year failed to find buyers. Second, as if the market problems were not enough, many coins were lightly struck. Peters and Mohon wrote in 1995, “If a fully struck gem is found, buy it!”
Proofs are elusive, but when found they are apt to be nicer in quality than those of the preceding two years.
CIRCULATION STRIKES:
Characteristics and Appearance: Striking is often subpar, with lightness on the stars or on the corn ear. Luster can be dull. This date is a challenge for the connoisseur. There were 132 obverse dies made. 3008 (Deep Cameo)——3,0006,25015,500—
PROOF STRIKES:
Characteristics and Appearance: Proofs are usually well struck with Full Details. Planchet flakes and chips are common on these and other Proofs of the era, as are lint marks.
