Key to Collecting: The 1879-O dollar is plentiful in lower Mint State levels from 60 through 63. MS-64 coins are scarce, and in proportion to the demand for them, MS-65 pieces are rare. A good choice for value is an MS-63 or MS-64, but hand-picked for quality; that is, without too many bagmarks. Coins in AU grade, once called “slider Uncirculated,” abound.
Surface Quality: Striking varies from sharp to average or below average, the last having weakness at the centers, in the hair strands above Liberty’s ear and the breast feathers of the eagle. Luster is typically frosty and attractive. Bagmarks are a huge problem.
Prooflike Coins: Some dies are prooflike, scarce as such, and DMPL are scarcer yet.
Mintage and Distribution: Through the 1950’s the 1879-O dollar was considered scarce in Mint State, although AU pieces were plentiful. In 1957 thousands were released, and the market value plummeted. The 1962 Treasury release yielded multiple bags, but nothing like the quantities of other O Mint dollars turned loose at that time.
VARIETIES:
1879-O, O Over Horizontal O—VAM-4. This variety is called O Over Horizontal O by VAM, who say it may be a triple-punched (but not over horizontal) O, indicating that opinion is divided. Breen (Encyclopedia, 1988, Breen5528) dismisses the O Over Horizontal O and calls it a triple-punched O. The Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties calls it O Over Horizontal O and makes no mention of VAM-4 tripling.
