Doubled die obverse variety.
Obverse Description
A shield flanked on the left and right by leaves topped with a cross with arrows positioned behind at the bottom so the arrow heads and shanks protrude at the sides. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears at the top periphery with the date positioned at the bottom center.
Reverse Description
A large numeral 5 surrounded by 13 stars centered in the design with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * CENTS around the periphery.

Key to Collecting: The 1875 Shield nickel is fairly scarce, but enough Mint State and Proof examples come into and out of the market to assure a ready supply for Shieldnickel specialists. Quality varies with both circulation strikes and Proofs, as it seems that some planchets used this year were not of the highest quality. Gem Mint State coins can be very attractive.
CIRCULATION STRIKES:
Characteristics and Appearance: The striking is usually good. Luster varies from dull to frosty. Quality is elusive for this date, and cherrypicking is advised.
PROOF STRIKES:
Characteristics and Appearance: Proofs vary in reflectivity and quality. Some have graininess (incomplete mirror surface) on the reverse, which is not unusual for other Proofs of this era.
VARIETIES:
Doubled-Die Obverse—FS-101, F-04. Strongly doubled die, most prominent at the annulet. URS-5. Other doubled dies are listed by Fivaz-Stanton and Fletcher.
